FARE, formerly the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AERF), is an independent non-profit national health organization based in Canberra, Australia.
FARE was established in 2001 by the Australian Parliament with a grant of US$115 million to allocate funds for projects and research aimed at preventing the harm caused by the abuse of alcohol and legal substances.
The organization’s initial funding came from an additional excise tax on draft beer, which was later rejected by the Senate. Within one year of the federal government’s collection of excise taxes, it has accumulated $120 million.
After supporting the community for 20 years, contributing to building evidence and encouraging action to prevent alcohol harm, FARE acknowledged that FARE Australia has made great strides in highlighting the huge impact that alcohol abuse has on too many Australians every year.
